Chapter 5: Breaking Bonds (Part 4)

Breaking Bonds_Fotor_Collage4

1
Trina’s mind
Danced around as
She made her way to the
Old family home, walking
Up the driveway
Of the house

2
Eddie had
Gathered the rest
Of the North Clan, 2 sons
And three daughters, it was
Their blood that could
Save the world

3
Trina took
A deep breath and
Pushed the front door open
The living room was dark,
The kitchen loud
She was home

4
Bruce smiled
Wrapping thick arms
Around Katrina, he
Was the second eldest
“We’re here,” Kiah
Said, first born

5
Kiah glared
She was pushing 60
But didn’t look a year more
Than 40, “What’s the big secret,”
Tika questioned,
Misty-eyed

6
“Hell is near,”
Eddie replied.
Sharice grimaced, her bald
Head bobbing as she stood
And hugged her long
Lost sister

7
“I’ve missed you,”
Sharice confessed.
Trina smiled and said,
“I wish we didn’t have to
Reunite at
Troubled times.”

8
Sharice was
Her best friend when
They were growing up, their
Bond untouchable
Always fighting
Side by side

9
Eddie huffed
And said, “The Vains
Are at it again.” Bruce
Jumped up and said, “They’re still
Breathing?” “Not quite,”
Eddie replied.

10
“How?” Bruce asked.
“Necromancers,
Probably,” Tika said.
“They trying to bring the
End of the world?”
Kiah huffed.

11
Katrina gulped
And said, “I have
A plan to stop them, but
It requires an old
North Family
Recipe.”

12
“You don’t mean
Great granny Lynn’s
Moon blade, do you?” Sharice
Questioned. “She done lost her
mind,” Kiah laughed.
They all had

13
Trina glared
“I can’t let my
Baby sister go to
The Underworld alone.
You got the rose?”
Kiah grinned.

Chapter 5: Breaking Bonds (Part 3)

Breaking Bonds_Fotor_Collage3

1
Trina rode
Down the empty
Street to Downtown Phoenix
Shivering in the odd
Cool summer breeze
She was shook

2
She never
Thought that she’d be
Dwelling on the past; when
Trina left Maryvale
She thought she had
No regrets

3
The taste of
Vivi’s chapstick
Still lingering on her
Mouth, made Trina realize,
She never moved
On from her

4
Running didn’t
Change the truth, that
Leaving Vivi behind
Took a tole on Trina
She wasn’t the same
Bright-eyed girl

5
The small shop
Came into view
Trina brought her Harley
To a stop and pulled off
Her helmet, she
Grinned, strutting

6
Wind chimes sang
A gust of rose
Incense rubbed Trina’s nose
The young woman behind
The counter didn’t look
Up at her

7
Trina cleared
Her throat and said,
“Is Vonzel in?” The young
Woman looked up and said,
“She’d been dead for
Three years now.”

8
“What you want
With my granny?”
Trina shook her head; “I’m
An old friend,” she replied.
“What you come here
For?” she asked.

9
Trina sighed
And said, “I need
A desert rose blessed by
La Bruja suprema.”
“My name’s Jade,” the
Woman said.

10
“Come with me.”
Trina followed
Jade behind a red silk
Sheet; the same one she had
Followed Vonzel
Through, before

11
The alter
Glowed, smoke and mist
Floating around as if
Protecting the food and wine
That sat untouched
Next to jewels

12
“What did you
Bring to offer,”
Jade bellowed; Trina shook
“Lengua Tamales,” she
Replied, pulling
Out a plate

13
Jade handed
Her a small stone
Rugged and rough, the white
And brown rock resembled
A tumbleweed
“Be Cautious.”

Chapter 5: Breaking Bonds (Part 2)

Breaking Bonds_Fotor_Collage2
1
Vivi glared
“Of course you do,”
She cried, “It was too high
Of a hope that you would
Be here to say
You’re sorry.”

2
Trina’s eyes
Could have fallen
Out of her head and that
Would still be better than
The look from her
Ex-lover

3
Trina shook
“I don’t have time
Something is coming, fast,”
Trina deflected; her
Eyes moving to the
Dirty floor

4
Vivi huffed,
“What’s after you?”
“Not just me,” she replied,
“The whole town.” Vivi flinched
And grabbed Trina’s
Icy hands

5
Her eyes twitched
And she stumbled
Trina caught her, wrapping
Her arm around her waist
Vivi moaned; her
Breathing thick

6
Vivi shook
Her head and tore
Away from Trina, “It’s
Already here,” she cried.
“What?” Trina asked.
“Death’s killer.”

7
“You must leave,”
Vivi pleaded.
Trina squinted and said,
“I can’t just go, it’s not
Like last time. I
Have to fight.”

8
“A war is
Brewing; evil
Is coming to Mary-
Vale,” Vivi warned. Trina
Shook her head, “I
Can stop it.”

9
“If you stay,”
Vivi cried, “You
Will die.” “I have my kin
With me,” Trina replied,
“Our blood can kill
All evil.”

10
“I saw it,”
Vivi cried, “They
Will die, then you will too.”
Trina shivered; “Sometimes
Your visions are
Wrong,” she said.

11
Trina winked
Vivi smiled
“I hope this time they are,”
Vivi replied, “I don’t
Want to lose you
For real, Love.”

12
Trina pressed
Her lips gently
Against Vivi’s, pulling
Her close to her body
She softly wiped
Vivi’s cheek

13
“I need a
Spell,” Trina said.
“Which one?” Vivi squinted.
“One to get me to The
Underworld and
back,” she said.

Chapter 5: Breaking Bonds (Part 1)

Breaking Bonds_Fotor_Collage

1
August 1981
Trina knew
That she was a
True poet on the mic
As her melodic words
Caressed Trina’s
Aged eardrums

2
The woman’s
Full lips released
Every syllable of
Trina’s heart into the
Atmosphere; she
Adored it

3
15 long years had
Passed since Trina
Saw Vivian Crasts sing
All the memories came
Flooding back in
Drowning her

4
‘Vivi’s’ crown
Sat on her head
Like a rising sun, her
Golden brown locks shining
As she swayed up
On the stage

5
Her siren
Song swooning men
And women onto the
Dance floor, her slow jam spell
Reviving long
Dead spirits

6
Trina grinned
As she watched her
“I won’t say it again,”
Vivi sang, “Time to turn
The tables and
Give me life.”

7
The music
Soothed Katrina
And she forgot for a
Moment why she had gone
To Smokie’s that
Dreadful night

8
Vivi’s song
Ended and the
Crowded joint erupted
Vivi smiled, gripping
Onto the loud,
Fierce applause

9
She took her
Exit off stage
Trina followed her to
The back, smooth and careful
“Stunning,” she said,
“As always.”

10
Vivi gasped
And leaped up from
Her chair; she grabbed Trina
And pressed her soft lips deep
Into Trina’s
Long lost kiss

11
Vivi did
Not stop; draining
The guilt and shame away
She pulled away and gasped
“I missed you,” she
Whistled low.

12
Not a blink
Not a slight flinch
Just a shift of her eyes
And the world spun off
Axis; she was
Her weakness

13
Trina gulped
Not wanting the
Kiss to end; she stepped back,
There for a reason; “I
Need your help, Viv,”
She confessed

Chapter 4: Grim Reapings (Part 4)

Grim Reapings

1
Mark’s life flashed
In front of his
Brown almond shaped eyes and
He had nothing to show for it
His whole life was
All a scam

2
He went from
One shit-town to
Another, riding the
Coattails of some poor soul
Who thought they were
Mr. Lucky

3
The he got
Caught up with Ghouls
Offering his essence
To get him out of a
Mess in Texas
He was scammed

4
Mark didn’t know
That his mama
Would sell her soul for him
So he became a slave
In exchange for
His mom’s soul

5
But Mark didn’t
Play by the rules
And that’s what got him in
The middle of a brawl
With demons, ghouls,
And a queen

6
Luz picked up
The gun Mark dropped
Aimed it at the demon
Sinking it’s fangs into
Mark’s arm and pulle
The trigger

7
Covered in
Ashes Mark fell
And groaned; the monsters were
Dead, the bar was empty,
And Luz was pissed
Royally

8
“Don’t kill me,”
Mark pleaded, his
Back on the floor; Luz sighed
“You set me up,” she said.
“It was all part
Of my plan.”

9
Mark flinched as
Luz extended
Her hand, pulling him up
“Hell’s not gonna be pleased,”
She said, a grin
On her face

10
“They’ve never
Been fans of me,”
Mark replied; Luz smiled
“You got a place to stay,”
She asked, Mark shook
His head, no

11
Luz showed Mark
Around the church
He noticed the broken
Benches and chipped statues
“You fight a lot huh?”
He remarked.

12
Luz rolled her
Eyes and said, “You
Can stay here.” She showed him
A small room with a bed
Behind the stage
Cozy room

13
“Thank you,” Mark
Said and hugged Luz.
“You should rest now,” Luz said.
“You should leave here,” Mark said,
“They’ll never
Stop chasing you.”

Chapter 4: Grim Reapings (Part 3)

Grim Reapings

1
“Put ‘em up,”
Mark demanded
Pointing the gun at her
The bar filled with laughter
It was a trap
She got scammed

2
“Drop the knives,”
Mark demanded.
A ghoul stepped up grinning
“Mark, you’ve out down yourself,”
The ghoul announced,
“You did it.”

3
“I didn’t think
You could trick she
Who haunts the Gallows,” the
Ghoul laughed, his tongue on Mark’s
Neck; Mark cringed and
Said, “It’s done.”

4
Mark’s voice quaked
“I did my part,
Max, free me from my deal,
And let my mother go.”
Luz dropped her knives
Grinding her teeth

5
Max sighed, grin
Stuck to his face
“Of course,” he said, “I keep
My deals.” Max clapped and a
Hell hound appeared
Scrolls in mouth

6
Max picked one
From his hound mouth
Opened it up and set
It on fire; it burned green
Two monsters held
Luz in place

7
Mark breathed out
“That’s it?” he asked.
“Yes,” Max said, “Take her to
The back. I want a taste.”
Mark grinned and said,
“That’s perfect.”

8
Mark turned the
Gun onto Max
And fired shots into
His heart; Max screamed and turned
To dust; Mark kept
On shooting

9
Mark fried
Around the bar
Luz kicked the monsters on
Each side and dove for her
Knives; she stabbed
A demon

10
“I’m out,” Mark
Screamed; Luz tossed him
A box of bullets fast
The room filled with chaos
Mark reloaded
And fired

11
Luz sliced and
Diced and shredded
Ghosts, demons, ghouls, and hounds
Ashes flooding the bar
Mark fell; he didn’t
Stop shooting

12
A demon
Sunk its claws, deep
Into Mark’s shoulder and
Dragged him across the floor
“You betrayed us,”
The demon roared.

13
Mark screamed and
Pointed the gun
At the demon, it knocked
The gun down and opened
Its teeth filled mouth
Craving flesh

Chapter 4: Grim Reapings (Part 2)

Grim Reapings

1
Luz followed
Closely behind
The young man, he was fat
With bronze skin and striking
Brown eyes; his face
Was gorgeous

2
His chin was
Square, his cheeks high
He had small almond eyes
Compared to her large eyes
He seemed sweet and
Innocent

3
He led her
Down the dirt road
Quick but cautious, he moved
Like he’d spent his whole life
Creeping around
The madness

4
“What’s your name?”
Luz asked when he
Stopped across from a bar
He looked at her and said,
“Mark, and you are?”
“Luz,” she said.

5
Luz observed
The bar, counting
“What are those things?” Mark asked.
“Demons from hell,” Luz said.
“How do we kill
‘em.” he asked.

6
Luz exhaled,
“We don’t, I do.”
“You ain’t goin’ in there
Without me,” Mark declared.
“Only my hands
Can kill them.”

7
Mark uttered,
“You can’t stop me.”
Luz sighed and said, “Take this.”
Handing him a pistol
“Aim for the heart;
And don’t miss.”

8
“A gun?” Mark
Asked, “What’ll this do?”
“The bullets are blessed,” Luz
Said, “Hit the heart and they
Will turn to dust.”
Mark’s eyes shined

9
They approached
The side of the
Bar; at least a dozen
Demons and ghouls lurked there
Luz took a deep
Breath and marched

10
Luz walked in
Hands on her hips
“What’s a girl gotta do
To get a drink in here?”
The monsters howled
Luz smiled

11
Familiar
She recognized
A demon with black hair
And a goatee; he stepped
In front of Luz
Observing

12
Nose to nose
Luz looked at him
“I thought I told you to
Stay away from my town.”
“I don’t like rules,”
He remarked.

13
Grinning, Luz
Head-butted the
Fiend and whipped out two knives
She stabbed him in the chest
He turned to dust
“Anyone else?”

Chapter 4: Grim Reapings (Part 1)

Grim Reapings.jpg

1
November 1891
Luz moved quick
Through the shadows
Of the street, stalking him
Waiting for his true face
To show under
The Moonlight

2
Luz waited
Keeping distance
On the dusty rooftops
He kept his arm around
His prey, grinning
Through stained fangs

3
His victim
Unaware of
The danger he followed
As he flirted with the
Hungry, pale-faced
Monster-man

4
He caressed
His prey, stopping
At the the end of the alley
The wind wailed and he said,
“You are superb.”
The youth grinned

5
The young man
Yelled as Phil squeezed
His shoulder and revealed
Crimson fangs; Phil comped down
On the youth’s neck
Sinking deep

6
Luz pulled out
Her favorite knife
With the crimson handle
It was her abuela’s
First knife she used
On Evil

7
Luz jumped down
From the rooftop
“Philip the Drainer,” she
Announced, “You made a grave
Mistake coming
To my town.”

8
Luz attacked
Phil tossed the youth
And punched Luz in the face
She kicked him in the gut
And swung her knife
In the air

9
Phil dove, duck
And punched Luz in
The chest, knocking the air
Out of her lungs; she dodged
His thick fist then
Sliced his side

10
Phil hissed while
Luz spun behind
And stabbed him in the ribs
She pulled the knife up and
Through his armpit
Burst to dust

11
Luz huffed, puffed
Wiping sweat from
Her forehead; she turned to
The young man, sitting in
The corner, his
Eyes bulging

12
“You saved me,”
The youth exclaimed
“De nada.” Luz replied
She grabbed him, observing
His bleeding neck
Prompt and safe

13
Luz turned back
“You can’t leave me,”
The youth cried, “What if his
Friends come back?” Luz looked back
“What friends?” she asked.
“The dead ones.”

Chapter 3: Drain ’em Dry (Part 3)

Drain 'em Dry2

1
The church was
Hot, much hotter
Than the desert outside
Baptiste followed the man
With the handsome, brown
Eyes—entranced

2
“Thanks,” he huffed,
Looking around,
Five others in the church
“Who’s this?” a brown girl asked.
Strutting forward
Through the pews

3
Handsome eyes
Stepped between them
“He’s with me,” he declared.
A boy with light skin said,
“You have a type.”
Baptiste gasped

4
“I’m Baptiste.”
The other youth
Surrounded him—caution
“Rafa loves playing hero,”
A young red-haired
Girl remarked.

5
Red-hair grinned,
“I’m Reece.” “I’m Cal,”
The light skinned teen said; he
Plopped down onto a bench.
“Gigi,” the brown
Girl added.

6
Baptiste grinned
“Chris,” a young
Kid waved, no older than twelve.
“I’m Sal, and you met my
Brother, Rafa.”
—Sexy bass

7
Fine chiseled,
With dark brown skin
He walked next to Baptiste
“Welcome to the last stop
Right before the
Inferno.”

8
Baptiste cringed
“Everything North
Of the border is burned,”
Rafa confessed, voice smooth.
“That’s just perfect,”
Baptiste whelped.

9
“I’m kinda,
On my way to
Arizona,” he said.
The youth in the room gasped
“Mexico is,
All that’s left.”

10
Baptiste sank
At Rafa’s words
All this time he ran from
The only home he knew
For nothing but
A scorched dream

11
Baptiste fell,
His knees jelly
“Stay here,” Rafa offered.
“I must find my father,”
Baptiste confessed,
“Or I’m doomed.”

12
“But,” Rafa said,
“It’s a wasteland;
Nothing but death and ash.”
“What do you mean?” Sal asked,
“What trouble are
You stuck in?”

13
“If I don’t
Find my father,”
Baptiste began, “I won’t
Be able to fight it.”
“Fight what?” Sal asked.
“Evil—Me.”

Chapter 3: Drain ’em Dry (Part 2)

Drain 'em Dry2

1
The hounds howled
Celebrating
Their catch with snarling mouths
They surrounded Baptiste
Grinning through sharp
Orange fangs

2
Eyes closed tight
As the hounds leaped
Ready to rip and shred
Teeth gnashing, iron claws
Slashing; Baptists?
Out of time

3
Blood spraying
Fur flying; his
Eyes stayed shut as the sound
Of death and battle roared
Heavy breathing
And reflection

4
Flashbacks of
A life Baptiste
Wish he’d had; stuck in the
Apocalypse, rotting
20 years of hell, 19 of
Which were his

5
Hell swarmed and
Engulfed the Earth
The year before Baptiste
Was born, Catastrophe
Erupted and
Humans changed

6
His mother
The Queen of a
Cult of surviving human
Warriors who learned the
Ways of Zahlos
Death magic

7
He escaped
On his 17th birthday
Fighting off demons, ghosts,
And ghouls in the desert
Wishing he’d find
Safe haven

8
Baptiste could
Not stand the foul
Crimes his people enjoyed,
The wicked things they did
To gain power
And “survive”

9
Bloodshed and
Throat cutting
The Cult of Zahlos were
Strong, ruthless, blood-thirsty
Necromancer
Corrupters

10
But as he
Laid in the dirt
Awaiting death by fangs
All he wished was to see
His tough mama
One more time

11
Silence fell
His beating heart
And immense breathing, the
Only sounds that filled the
Dry Sonoran
Air; deadly

12
Baptiste gasped
His eyes opened
To the diced and sliced hounds
Staining the dirt with blood
He looked up at
Handsome eyes

13
Baptiste moaned
“You saved my life.”
The tall umber-skinned man
Reached out his hand, squinting
“Come with me,” his
Voice, calming
